History of the Groo, my story

While wandering aimlessly thru a QT (Quik Trip for those who have not been to the midwest), I walked past the magazine rack and suddenly my brain started to go numb.  This was an odd thing to happen to a teen-ager, but it did.  As I went to the counter for help, everything felt fine.  Sure, I was thinking the alien implant in my skull was activated by a burrito in the microwave but turns out it was not.  I then for some reason went down the candy aisle, around the corner, and found myself back at the magazine rack where once again my brain went numb.  This time I looked over towards the comics, and could see all the misc titles clearly accept for one.  I picked it up to see what was behind the blurry mess and to find the source of my numbness.  Yep, you guessed it... Groo #8.  Ever since then, my life has been different.  No longer did I have aspirations for Law School, to finish my Doctor training, or to build a computer software empire.  No, I had this uncontrollable urge to read Groo #8, and then purchase other such comics bearing the mark of Groo.  The addiction was locked in.  Sure, the doodles did remind me of the marginals from Mad Magazine, and the Sergio doodle books I purchased, but none of those changed me like that Groo #8.  The addiction then spread.  As I wandered around the planet seeking out my newly found desire for cheese dip, I showed the comic to others including my father (still a great man, able to resist the effects of Groo) and former girlfriends (no wonder they left).  Time moved, comics were published, rent money was spent, and then came the news... no more Groo.  Then the unthinkable happens, Groo stops, ends, quits.  Cold turkey, no more Groo.  Oh, sure, I can go to back issues but that does no good.  After years in and out of treatment centers like GAA (Groo Addictions Anonymous), I was finally cured, or so I thought.  July 2001, I am surfing the web, remembering the fun past of Groo Comics, stumble upon Dark Horse Comics, and darn it if Groo is not alive and kicking again.  I fell off the wagon like a ton of bricks, sold my stock in Mulch Inc, and am heading to the comic store.

Who is responsible for this "Groo"??

Sergio Aragonés

Sergio is the madman who created Groo.  I 1st encountered Sergio in Mad Magazine drawing the marginals (cartoons in the margins) and then in the many books he put out of just his drawings.

Mark Evanier

Mark.... not really sure what it was that he did... I mean Sergio did all the work, Tom and San made it look nice, maybe Mark was around to take the credit. (hehe)
Actually (quoting from Mark) "my longtime pal Sergio Aragonés asked me to become his co-conspirator on Groo the Wanderer, which has become one of the longest-running comic books of those owned by creators and not companies."

Tom Luth & San Sakai

And what's a comic with out the brilliant lettering and incredible colors?  Its just a news paper.

So what is Groo??

Groo the Wander, a barbarian who also happens to be an idiot who loves cheese dip.
To shamelessly steal the words of Mark Evanier:
It's the story of a barbarian who is as dangerous as a stampede of cattle...and almost as smart.  Along with his intrepid, oddly-loyal hound Rufferto, he roams another time and place, leaving destruction in his wake.   - POVOnline - POV is Mark's website where he goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about Groo and other things he "has done" - (its really cool!!)

The Cast of Groo

Groo's world includes an array of many interesting people.  While looking thru my computer, I discovered a folder called "Temporary Internet Files" where to my surprise there were many images of Groo including comics and other stuff.  Here are some of the images that magically appeared on my computer, most likely sent to my by either Groo or Sergio himself!! (but we should never question magic)
While I do take credit for arranging these images on the pages, I feel an overwhelming need to add this line:

I am not sure why I needed to add this, but I did...
